One thing new bloggers are confused at is “choosing the right keywords”, recently I started talking with a lot of new bloggers through social media, forums, and blogger communities.

All of them are saying one common problem “I don’t know how to pick the right keywords for my blog posts” and they are asking me to show them how to do it.

I want to rank for SEMrush seed keyword which is a highly competitive keyword in blogger community, I wrote one article on SEMrush review which is not ranking at all in Google, so I decided to pick another keyword which will place me on the first page.

After doing some research, I came up with this keyword “SEMrush for Affiliate marketing“, now I am comfortably ranking for this keyword in the first page with decent organic traffic.

I just shared this example to make you realise how selecting keywords will help you to rank better in search engines to get decent organic traffic.

How To Pick The Best Keywords To Rank Better?

By seeing at content index, you might think why I am talking about the domain authority in picking keywords, now I will clarify your doubt, domain authority plays a major role in Google rankings.

What is domain authority?

Domain authority is a quality score (1 – 100) developed by MOZ to predict the website’s quality by analyzing backlinks to that website if you have higher domain authority the chances of ranking and getting organic traffic is high in Google.

Google has its own algorithms to estimate the domain authority(DA), but they don’t reveal the information to webmasters so we are depending on Moz which is using a similar type of algorithms to estimate the DA and PA( page authority), this information by Moz developers are well accepted around the world.

Why we need to know about our domain authority?

If we know our domain authority then we can predict whether we can rank for that keyword or not by looking at Google search results, you can check your domain authority by visiting Moz open site explorer

Moz has Google Chrome extension “Mozbar” which display all website’s DA and PA in Google search results.

Here is the screenshot how Mozbar is showing results for ” long tail pro review” keyword with DA and PD in Google search results.

By looking at search results, we can predict whether we can rank for that keyword or not if top 10 position results have higher domain authority than your website’s DA then you can not rank for that easily until unless you build good quality backlinks for that article.

How To Find Seed Keywords and Long tail keyword?

First we have to select seed keyword to find out long tail keywords related to it, for example, if we take “affiliate marketing” as the main keyword then we can consider “affiliate marketing lead generation”, “affiliate marketing programs”, “affiliate marketing conversion rate” as long tail keywords.

Finding long tail keywords is possible with various free tools with search volume and Long Tail Pro is the best premium tool to get long tail keyword which is an essential and worthful investment for every blogger.

I wrote an article about top 5 keyword research tools with search volume and you can check my review about long tail pro review to know how to use them to get long tail keywords.

Another great free option used by everyone is Google keyword planner, using this tool we can find so many long tail keywords which are less competitive if you don’t know how to use Google keyword planner then go through this article written by Mr. Brian Dean.

What is Latent Semantic Keyword (LSI keywords) & How to find them?

LSI keywords are similar to synonyms, but they are not synonyms, but they do have a relationship between two phrases or keywords.

When we are typing some keywords in Google search it automatically suggests some extra phrases, we can consider these keywords as LSI keywords, Google search even gives us related search information at the bottom of the page.

We have to note down all the LSI keywords to include in our article if we include these keywords we even rank for those keywords also on Google SERP.

I wrote an article about free LSI keywords suggestion tools which gives complete information about how these keywords rank for a single article and how we have to include those keywords in our article and benefits of adding LSI keywords.

How To Use All These Keywords in Article?

I hope every one of you knows how to do on page SEO optimization with a focused keyword if not, don’t worry once again we will recollect those basics.

Include your focused keyword in title, URL, subheading(H2, H3), use this keyword in the first 100 words of the article and sprinkle all LSI keywords throughout the article without disturbing the user’s readability flow, add a keyword to image alt tag.

How To Build Backlinks To the Article?

Usually, search engine takes time to rank any keyword in Google if we don’t want to wait, then we have to earn or build backlinks for that article, easy way to build backlinks for that particular article is commenting on CommentLuv enabled blogs, this commenting system adds our recent article to our comment and that becomes backlink for us.

Another way is actively participating on forums where they allow user signature and RSS feed option to pull the recent article for every interaction we make with threads.

Recently I wrote an article about how to build quality backlinks to your blog, check out this article to learn the process involved in building links.
