Tanmay Bhat is an Indian script writer, producer, stand-up comedian, and co-founder of world-famous comedy group All India Bakchod. He was among the four comedians to be featured in the first comedian line up “Local Heroes” at Comedy Store Mumbai. Thereafter, he soon performed in Best In Stand Up event alongside comics based in the UK. He studied at Sheth Chunilal Damodardas Barfiwala High School. He was ranked Times of India’s one of “Top 10 Comics in India”. He was also the co-founder of first comedy podcast in India with All India Bakchod with Gursimran Khamba. He has also appeared in few of the Bollywood films as cameo appearances or in small roles like Mr. X and Ragini MMS 2.
About AIB – Tanmay Bhat
AIB or All India Bakchod is a most popular Indian comedy sketch group. Initially, it was founded by Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba. Later on, Ashish Shakya and Roshan Joshi joined it. Kaneez Surka and Abish Mathew frequently work with them. All the four members have equal ownership of this group. It has its own YouTube channel to show their comedy roast and parodies on topics like society, politics, and Indian film industry. Most of the reputation they have earned is online.
The group started up with podcast before YouTube in 2013 to share their comedic jobs. They simply had lack of funds for promotional materials and advertisements so they used YouTube. So, they relied on social media for the promotion of their work.
Currently, the group has grossed over whopping 100 million views on their videos and over 2.1 million YouTube subscribers, as of March 2017. For brand consulting, script writing, and coordinating corporate and academic workshops, the group has several employees in house. AIB organized a roast show on grand level in December 2014, All India Bakchod Knockout Championship, featuring the host Karan Johar with actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh has subjects.
The event has successfully risen up to Rs. 40 Lakhs for charity organizations like Vogue Empower (works on women empowerment), and Being Human. They also conduct stand-up performances around the world. They also run Vigyapanti, an advertisement wing started in October 2015. With the launch of “Creep Qawwali”, an online video, it was kicked off. Creep Qawwali was also an ad for a dating portal named Truly Madly.
About the Show – On Air with AIB
On Star Network, AIB also started news comedy series “On Air with AIB” in October 2015. First of all, the 20-episode series (10 in Hindi and 10 in English) was released on Hotstar, and then it aired on weekend on Star Plus and STAR World India. Under the AIB First Draft banner, it also performs screenwriting workshops.
It is a typical news-comedy show which is designed to throw comedy on tragedy. Hosted by Tanmay Bhat along with Rohan Joshi,Ashish Shakya and Gursimran Khamba, the show featured sketches, interviews and examination of issues faced by the country. It has been written and co-hosted by Zakir Khan. AIB Season 2 is released but only on Hotstar.
Politics – Tanmay Bhat
AIB has sometimes taken controversial steps on various liberal issues. They shared “Rape: It’s Your Fault”, a satirical video in 2013, featuring Juhi Pandu and Kalki Koechlin. The video crossed over 5 million views and went viral and resulted in controversies on the way rape victims are treated by the law and media in India.
AIB has highly been against Free Basics program by Facebook as it violates net neutrality. The group shared three videos in 2015 which went viral on YouTube, to request people to write to the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to keep internet neutral in India towards content providers and contents and offering a great boost to the SaveTheInternet campaign. Later on, TRAI finally ruled against different data charges based on content and supported net neutrality which caused the end of 0-rating platforms including Airtel Zero and Free Basics.
The Demonetization Circus on Modi – Tanmay Bhat
In addition, they also uploaded a satirical video in 2016 named “The Demonetization Circus” on Modi’s stance on demonetizing the currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 in India. It exposed the problems faced by the people and reaction of citizens in satirical way.
Presented by All India Bakchod, The Royal Turds is a comic awards function which introduces the worst parts in Indian film industry. It is presented by Tanmay Bhat along with other stand-up comedians like Abish Mathew. The event is promoted and organized by NH7 and OML. It is conducted in the form of stand-up comedy and the variations of the show are recreated by them in different shows at different or same locations, and often in other cities in India. A golden mug is the statuette over there which depicts the article which is used by the people to clean up followed by defecation. Selected clips are being published on YouTube and no other clip has been published since 2013.
Controversy created by the show
President of Brahman Ekta Sanstha, Mumbai, Akhilesh Tiwari filed a complaint in written on February 2, 2015 at Sakinaka Police Station for using “abusive and filthy language” in AIB Knockout. Mumbai Police quickly started an inquiry regarding this complaint filed against the participants, including actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, and filmmaker Karan Johar. On January 28, 2015, an edited video was published in YouTube on the event held of December 28. The inquiry had been ordered against the participants and organizers by the government of Maharashtra.
The roast event of the group was criticized by Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. He added, “He is not against the freedom of speech. But we have certain responsibility for the society as creative persons.” Anurag Kashyap, in response to his statement, shared a link on his official Facebook page which shows how Khan defends DK Bose song in Delhi Belly. He said “We have already notified that it’s an adult film to the audiences. Please don’t go with someone who have language problem and who are kids to watch the film. We have informed the audiences in advance.”
But AIB has also provided statutory warning in the beginning which mentions “18+ content of offensive nature.” To ensure message to reach everyone, Karan Johar also repeated that warning.
